Sam Champion Reflects on Skin Cancer Battle, Stresses Importance of Early Detection

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — Renowned Eyewitness News meteorologist Sam Champion has returned to work following an extended leave for skin cancer surgery. Throughout his recovery, Champion has been utilizing social media to share his journey, striving to raise awareness about skin cancer and the crucial need for regular check-ups.

Champion emphasized the significance of building a strong, long-term relationship with a dermatologist. “These are the people who know my skin,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of having one’s skin checked regularly. Despite his diligence, Champion was found to have skin cancer on his face.

Following his long-time dermatologist’s retirement, Champion consulted Dr. Anthony Rossi, a dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). “It takes a bit of trial and error to find the right doctor,” Champion explained, acknowledging the importance of finding a specialist for what he termed a “lifelong relationship.”

Dr. Rossi explained the complexities of skin cancer, likening them to “icebergs” with unseen, deeper growth. “Sometimes we only see the tip of the iceberg,” he noted. Through Mohs surgery, a technique that examines the cancerous tissues under the microscope in real-time, doctors can precisely remove the cancerous areas while preserving healthy tissue. This method is particularly advantageous for sensitive areas such as the face or genitals.

Skin cancer, often linked to sun exposure, can be highly treatable if diagnosed early, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association. The organization advises sun protection to mitigate risks associated with skin cancer, as well as premature aging effects such as age spots and wrinkles.

Champion’s personal battle with skin cancer began at the age of 26, and he has since undergone numerous surgeries, the most recent being on the skin beneath his right eye. “I want you to be prepared,” Champion conveyed, urging viewers to prioritize knowledge and prevention. “I want you to have knowledge so that you’re never surprised.”

The journalist and self-proclaimed nature enthusiast, who spends considerable time in sun-rich locations like Miami Beach and Rio de Janeiro with his husband Rubem Robierb, admits to having suffered from severe sunburns in the past. Champion, who has a fair complexion, underscored his increased susceptibility to skin cancer due to his skin type and sun exposure history.

Champion continues to advocate for sun protection and regular dermatologist visits, often sharing sunscreen recommendations with his 187,000-plus social media followers. He expressed his desire for individuals to comprehend the potential ramifications of sun exposure and take proactive measures.
