Minnesota Vikings Quarterback Sam Darnold

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — Just days ahead of free agency, the future of Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold hangs in the balance following a standout, yet tumultuous 2024 season.

Despite leading the Vikings to a 14-3 record and earning a Pro Bowl selection after throwing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns, Darnold is set to become a free agent next week. The Vikings opted not to place the franchise tag on him before Tuesday’s deadline, allowing him to explore opportunities with other teams starting March 12.

The Vikings’ decision not to tag Darnold, which would have cost them $40.24 million, has sparked speculation about his future. NFL insiders report that the team remains engaged in discussions with Darnold’s camp to potentially keep him in Minnesota.

“He’s earned the right to be a free agent,” said Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell. “But we will continue ongoing dialogue and discussions with him and his representation.”

Though Darnold enjoyed a standout season, finishing fifth in the league for passing yards and touchdown passes, his performance in the final two games raised concerns. He totaled just one touchdown pass and fell short against the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs, which led many to question his long-term viability as the team’s starting quarterback.

“Darnold showed he has the talent, but consistency is key,” said a former NFL scout. “Teams are looking at quarterbacks they can rely on week in and week out.”

Teams needing a quarterback, including the Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Giants, will likely be watching Darnold closely as he enters free agency. Many will question whether the Vikings can offer him a contract that reflects his performance last season while considering their commitments to other positions.

Despite not using the franchise tag, the Vikings have approximately $60 million in cap space to work with as they aim to fill gaps on their roster. They will also have to consider the emergence of rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, whom they selected with the 10th overall pick in 2024. McCarthy missed last season due to a knee injury but is expected to return in 2025.

“The Vikings have to weigh their options carefully,” said a football analyst. “With McCarthy in the wings, they need to decide if they want to commit to Darnold long-term or let him walk and develop their young talent.”

As the clock ticks down to free agency, the Vikings remain hopeful they can strike a deal with Darnold that works to both their advantages. However, with his impressive tenure last season, it’s likely other teams will be willing to offer him a lucrative contract that Minnesota might find challenging to match.

With the looming possibility of Darnold moving on, the Vikings could be on the brink of another major roster transition as they prepare for the upcoming season.
