Sam Houston Sweeps Liberty in Doubleheader at Don Sanders Stadium

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Sam Houston Bearkats celebrated a successful doubleheader against the Liberty Flames on Saturday, winning both games of the Conference USA matchup at Don Sanders Stadium. The Bearkats took game one 8-7 and followed it up with a 7-1 victory in the second game.

In the first game, Sam Houston grabbed an early lead, scoring five runs in the second inning. The highlight was a grand slam by second baseman Blake Brown, giving the Bearkats a 6-1 advantage after five innings. However, the Liberty Flames rallied, tying the game at 6-6 with a strong performance in the late innings.

Flames left fielder hit a two-run triple with two outs in the seventh, pulling the score even. Nonetheless, Bearkats right fielder Brady Christensen hit a decisive home run in the bottom of the seventh, pushing Sam Houston ahead 7-6. They managed to add an insurance run in the eighth inning before Liberty’s second baseman homered in the ninth to make it 8-7. However, Bearkat reliever Devin Bennett stepped up, retiring the final two batters to secure the win.

Shortstop also had a standout performance with three hits in the first game. Liberty’s Barone pitched in with a double and a triple, while Scilley recorded two hits, including his fourth home run of the season. The Flames finished the first game with a total of 11 hits compared to Sam Houston’s 9.

Game two saw the Bearkats take control early, leading 3-0 after two innings. Starting pitcher Ryan Peterson threw a dominant game, allowing only three hits over seven scoreless innings. Sam Houston’s offense continued to shine, finishing the game with 11 hits.

Liberty was unable to find its footing in the second game, managing only one run, which came in the ninth inning from Lane. The Flames fell to 7-13 in CUSA and 26-21 overall, while Sam Houston improved to 5-15 in conference play and 11-36 overall.

Looking ahead, the two teams will complete their three-game series on Sunday, with the final game scheduled for 1 p.m. EST/12 p.m. CST at Don Sanders Stadium.
