Sam Leavitt May Return for ASU vs. Texas Tech Clash

TEMPE, Arizona — Arizona State sophomore quarterback Sam Leavitt is listed as probable for Saturday’s game against No. 7 Texas Tech. Leavitt has practiced this week following a lower-body injury that sidelined him during last week’s 42-10 loss to Utah.
Leavitt’s injury occurred during a game against Baylor on September 20. After starting against TCU the following week, he struggled with mobility and was downgraded to doubtful before missing the Utah game entirely, prompting senior backup Jeff Sims to start in his place.
Head coach Kenny Dillingham expressed optimism about Leavitt’s recovery. “I feel good about Sam and where he’s at,” he told reporters Wednesday. “There are still two more days, but I feel really good about Sam.” Dillingham noted that Leavitt looked better during practice, which was evident as he managed to participate without the restrictive tape that had previously encased his foot.
In addition to Leavitt, Arizona State is facing challenges on the offensive line. Graduate offensive lineman Ben Coleman is out following surgery for a left arm injury suffered in the Utah game. Freshman center Wade Helton, who also missed practice time, appears on the team’s availability report as probable.
Offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo emphasized the need for chemistry among the offensive line, especially with the tough defensive pressure expected from Texas Tech, which has averaged 21 sacks this season. “It’s a good challenge,” Arroyo stated. “I think these guys have done a nice job this week answering the bell.”
Saturday’s game will be crucial for the Sun Devils, who are looking to rebound from their recent loss and stay competitive in the Big 12 standings. Their current record stands at 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Leavitt has thrown for eight touchdowns and 1,039 yards this season, completing 63.1% of his passes. With Texas Tech bringing a formidable defense to Mountain America Stadium, his return is hoped to bolster the Sun Devils’ chances for an upset.
