San Jose, California – San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Hernan Lopez underwent successful right shoulder surgery on Friday and is expected to miss three to four months, the club announced.

The 24-year-old Argentine joined the Earthquakes in March 2024 from Godoy Cruz for a club-record $6 million. In his first season with the team, Lopez made a significant impact, scoring six goals and providing two assists in 24 matches.

“Hernan has been a key player for us, and we are fully focused on his recovery process,” said Earthquakes head coach Bruce Arena. Lopez contributed nine goals and three assists in 32 total appearances across all competitions since his arrival.

With Lopez sidelined, San Jose will need to adjust its strategy. The team may consider alternative options, including a potential replacement from their roster or turning to US youth international players.

Lopez’s timeline for recovery suggests he could return by July, which could allow him to participate in the latter part of the MLS season, where San Jose is set to have 14 matches remaining in its 34-game regular-season schedule.

Before his injury, Lopez featured in two matches this season but has yet to score. His contributions were crucial not only in previous matches but also in the club’s current campaign, where they stand with a record of 2-1-0 and six points.

In 2019-2024, Lopez accumulated significant stats across different clubs in Argentina, including scoring seven goals for Godoy Cruz before making his move to MLS.

The Earthquakes are preparing to host the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, where they will look to maintain their momentum in the early season. Arena has built the team’s offensive strategy around Lopez alongside standout players, emphasizing the need for adaptability during his absence.
