San Jose Sharks’ Macklin Celebrini Placed on Injured Reserve Due to Hip Injury
The San Jose Sharks have announced that their highly touted rookie forward, Macklin Celebrini, has been placed on injured reserve due to a hip injury. Celebrini, the first overall pick in the 2024 NHL draft, made a remarkable debut on October 10, scoring a goal and recording an assist in the Sharks’ 5-4 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues.
Despite his impressive start, Celebrini has been dealing with a lower-body injury, specifically a hip issue, which he played through on opening night. The injury was severe enough to keep him out of practice on Friday, and he was officially placed on injured reserve on Saturday.
Head coach Ryan Warsofsky described the injury as week-to-week, indicating that Celebrini will miss at least the next seven days from his last game. The earliest he could return is for the game against the Winnipeg Jets on October 18, though there is no definitive timeline for his recovery.
In response to Celebrini’s absence, the Sharks have recalled defenseman Jack Thompson from their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda. Thompson was acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning as part of the Anthony Duclair trade during the 2024 Trade Deadline.
Celebrini’s injury is a significant blow to the Sharks, given his immediate impact on the team. He is already considered one of the best players on the roster, and his absence will be felt in the upcoming games. Teammates and coaches remain optimistic about his recovery, noting that his mental and physical resilience could facilitate a quicker return.
