San Marino Achieves Historic Competitive Victory After Two Decades
San Marino‘s national football team has achieved a significant milestone by securing their first competitive victory in history, defeating Liechtenstein 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League.
The match, held at the Stadio Olimpico, marked the end of a winless streak that extended for 140 games, a period that lasted over two decades since their sole previous victory, also against Liechtenstein, in a friendly match back in 2004.
19-year-old midfielder Nicko Sensoli emerged as the hero for San Marino, scoring the decisive goal in the 53rd minute with their first shot on target. Sensoli took advantage of an error by Liechtenstein’s Sandro Wieser, pushing the ball past goalkeeper Benjamin Buchel to ignite celebrations among San Marino’s players and supporters.
The match concluded with a tense eight minutes of added time, during which San Marino’s defense held firm to protect their lead. Upon the final whistle, jubilant scenes ensued as coaching staff and substitutes celebrated on the pitch, while some Liechtenstein players were visibly distressed.
This victory not only ended San Marino’s long-standing winless run but also temporarily placed them at the top of their Nations League group, as their only other competitor, Gibraltar, had yet to play a match.
San Marino, a small republic with a population of just over 30,000, has historically faced challenges in international football, being well-known for their struggles and heavy defeats. Their footballing narrative has shifted with this latest achievement, marking a turning point for the team.
