San Marino Football Victory Celebration

San Marino‘s men’s national football team, known as the “Titani,” ended a 20-year-long losing streak with an unexpected victory against Liechtenstein on September 5th. This triumph brings a newfound sense of excitement as they prepare for their next match against Gibraltar on October 10th, raising questions about their potential for resurgence in the football world.

Historically, San Marino’s national football team has been perceived as one of the worst in international competitions, having suffered a staggering 140 consecutive defeats. Despite some moments of near success, they had not tasted victory since their last win in 2004, also against Liechtenstein.

The pivotal match took place at Stadio Olimpico in Serravalle, San Marino, where a single goal from 19-year-old midfielder Nicko Sensoli secured the long-awaited victory. “It’s not easy to hold back your emotions, I still feel on top of the world,” Sensoli remarked following the match. The goal came at the 49th minute, and the team ardently defended their lead until the final whistle blew, marking the end of the drought with an unforgettable win.

Roberto Cevoli, who was appointed the manager of the San Marino national team at the beginning of the year, played a key role in reinvigorating the squad. Cevoli emphasized the team’s commitment, expressing “I want to dream with no limits.” His leadership has been marked by introducing new talent, like Sensoli, and making several roster changes that seem to have invigorated the squad.

San Marino’s football history has been marked by challenges since joining UEFA and FIFA in 1988. Their international journey began with a loss to Switzerland in 1990. Success was scarce as they endured winless streaks punctuated by rare draws, most notably their first-ever draw against Turkey in 1993 and another against Estonia in 2014.

Despite yet another series of defeats earlier in the year, the mood in San Marino is optimistic following their recent win. As they compete in the UEFA Nations League D, San Marino aims for further victories that could potentially elevate them from League D to League C. They are grouped with Liechtenstein and Gibraltar, in matches that could pave the way for promotion.

This win brought international attention to the “Never Any Joy Brigade,” San Marino’s loyal supporters who celebrated jubilantly inside the stadium and throughout the country. They had long supported the struggling team with unwavering dedication, personifying a deep-seated hope that has finally been realized with the recent victory.

The upcoming match against Gibraltar will be crucial for San Marino. Gibraltar is historically a slight favorite, yet San Marino’s renewed spirit and commitment might make them a formidable opponent. As they strive to maintain their position at the top of their group, fans and players alike are driven by the potential of further success in the UEFA Nations League.
