Sanju Samson Makes History with Back-to-Back T20I Centuries Against South Africa
Sanju Samson has etched his name into the cricket history books with a remarkable achievement in the first T20I against South Africa in Durban on Friday, November 8. Samson became the first Indian batter to score centuries in consecutive T20I innings, a feat that only a few players have achieved globally.
In the match against South Africa, Samson smashed a brilliant hundred in just 47 balls, including 7 fours and 9 sixes. This performance follows his previous outing where he scored 111 runs off 47 balls against Bangladesh in Hyderabad. This back-to-back century milestone places him alongside England‘s Phil Salt, South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw, and France‘s Gustav McKeon as the only players to have achieved this feat in T20I cricket.
Samson’s innings was nothing short of spectacular, as he continued to torment the South African bowlers throughout the match. He reached his half-century off 27 balls and maintained his aggressive form even after the field spread out, taking on the bowlers with back-to-back sixes and fours.
This achievement is particularly significant for Samson, who has been on the fringes of the Indian T20I team but has now grabbed the opportunity to solidify his place in the top order, especially after the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from T20I cricket. Samson also achieved another milestone by becoming the joint-seventh fastest Indian batter to reach 7000 runs in T20s, doing so in his 269th innings, which is faster than the legendary MS Dhoni.
Samson’s performance has not only broken multiple records but has also highlighted his consistency and prowess in the shortest format of the game. He is currently the captain of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is making a strong case for a permanent spot in the Indian T20I team.
