Sara Ortega Aims for First Win Against Real Madrid This Weekend

Bilbao, Spain – Sara Ortega, a midfielder for Athletic Club, has played a pivotal role in her team’s early matches this season. At just 20 years old, Ortega has started all six league games so far, only missing a few minutes in two matches, including a 1-1 draw against Tenerife and another against Atlético de Madrid.
“I’m very happy to have so many minutes in Primera at such a young age,” Ortega said. “The playing style of our coach is very similar to what I am used to, and that gives me confidence.” With the upcoming visit of Real Madrid to San Mamés on October 12 at 17:00, Ortega feels optimistic about securing a much-needed victory for Athletic.
Ortega emphasized the importance of focusing on their play: “If we stick to our game plan, we can compete well, just like last season. San Mamés is an impressive stadium, and every time I step onto the field, it gives me goosebumps.”
Currently sitting in the fifth position in the league, Real Madrid has yet to claim an away win, having settled for two draws. “Last weekend’s game was a significant point for us, showing the team we were last year. I believe this match against Real Madrid can be the turning point for us,” Ortega added.
Athletic Club has struggled so far this season, accumulating just four points from six games, including two draws both at home and away. Ortega noted, “We’ve adapted to changes, including a new coach, and we’re growing with each game.” Though the Champions League seems a distant goal right now, Ortega remains determined: “We will fight for it. We still have many matches ahead.”
Having moved from Logroño to Bilbao at the age of 13, Ortega was raised in a farmhouse with her teammates and has grown fond of her time with Athletic. She has also been a part of various youth national teams, including the U-23 squad. “I focus on improving my game with Athletic. If I can help the team earn points, that’s my priority,” she stated.
This season, Ortega hopes to score her first goal after netting two in each of the last two seasons. “I’m looking forward to scoring this weekend; it’s about time,” she said with a smile. With her contract extending until 2026, Ortega is committed to making an impact at Athletic.
