Scott Steiner Looks Back on Snubbing WWE Championship Opportunity

ORLANDO, Fla. — Scott Steiner recently opened up about his decision to decline the opportunity to become a top champion in WWE during the early 1990s. In a podcast appearance, he responded to comments from WWE executive Bruce Prichard, who revealed that the company had considered making Steiner the champion, including a potential victory in the 1993 Royal Rumble to set up a title match.
During the podcast, Steiner recounted his thoughts on the idea of being crowned champion. “I heard that, especially with Bruce Prichard saying something like that,” he said. “But at the time, I had no interest whatsoever in being a World Champion. The timing wasn’t right.”
WWE reportedly wanted Scott and his brother, Rick Steiner, to compete against each other in the 1993 Royal Rumble, hinting at a future solo run for Scott. However, he rejected the proposal, emphasizing his desire to succeed as a tag team alongside his brother. “One of the reasons why I got into wrestling was to wrestle with my brother, prove that we’re the best brothers, and wrestle the best tag teams in the world,” he explained.
Steiner did, however, go on to find great success as a singles competitor in WCW, capturing the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in 2000. He noted that his eventual solo success stemmed from real-life frustrations with backstage politics in the wrestling business, which shaped his character and demeanor. “The politics in wrestling made me into a more bitter and angrier person,” Steiner shared.
As the professional wrestling landscape shifts, another member of the Steiner family, Bron Breakker, is gearing up for an important moment in his career at WrestleMania 41. Breakker, who is the reigning Intercontinental Champion, will defend his title in a Fatal Four-Way match against Penta and Dominik Mysterio on Sunday. This match marks a significant milestone for Breakker as it will be his WrestleMania debut.
Despite the challenges of facing three opponents, Breakker seems ready to rise to the occasion, drawing from the legacy of his family. The 27-year-old star, the son of Hall of Famer Rick Steiner and nephew of Scott, is recognized for his impressive skill set—a potent blend of strength and speed that has impressed audiences in WWE.
“I feel like I have a lot of wrestling in my blood,” Breakker said, as he prepares to step into the ring. He has already put the locker room on notice, showcasing a mix of intensity and impressive moves, including a powerful spear. Breakker aims to defend the ‘workhorse title’ at a prestigious event.
Rick Steiner, his father, achieved significant acclaim in WCW and WWE, winning eight World Tag Team Championships with his brother Scott. After their induction into the Hall of Fame in 2022, Rick transitioned to a career in real estate in Georgia, selling properties across the Atlanta metropolitan area. Despite stepping away from the ring, he supports his son’s journey in wrestling.
“I’m proud to see Bron stepping up to defend his title,” Rick said. “While my days in the ring are done, watching him succeed is immensely fulfilling.”
As Breakker approaches his match this weekend, he carries the weight of family expectations while striving to carve out his own path in wrestling history. The excitement surrounding his WrestleMania debut is palpable, with fans eager to see if he can defend the Intercontinental Championship successfully.
