Scottie Barnes Set to Return for Toronto Raptors Against Minnesota Timberwolves
After a three-week absence due to an orbital fracture, Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes is on the verge of returning to the lineup. Barnes is expected to play when the Raptors host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday night, marking a significant boost for a team that has struggled with injuries this season.
Barnes suffered the injury on October 28 during a game against the Denver Nuggets when he was hit in the face by Nikola Jokic in a scramble for a loose ball. The fracture required no surgery, and Barnes has been cleared for contact after a full practice session on Wednesday. He will wear protective goggles as a precaution upon his return.
The 23-year-old All-Star has been a crucial component of the Raptors, averaging 19.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game in the four games he played this season before the injury. His return is anticipated to enhance the team’s performance, particularly in areas such as defensive intensity, rebounding, and transition play.
Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic emphasized the multifaceted impact Barnes brings to the team. “It’s hard to limit (Barnes’ impact) to one thing,” Rajakovic said. “I think Scottie’s defensive intensity, protecting the rim, I think Scottie’s rebounding ability, the way he’s pushing the ball in transition, all of those things are things our team needs at this point.”.
The Raptors, currently with a 3-12 record, are looking to capitalize on Barnes’ return to improve their standings. They recently snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win over the Indiana Pacers, thanks in part to strong performances from RJ Barrett and Jakob Poeltl. However, they face a tough challenge against the Timberwolves, who are led by Rudy Gobert and Anthony Edwards.
Barnes’ return could also impact the playing time of other players, such as Ochai Agbaji, Jamison Battle, and Jonathan Mogbo. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his exact minutes, Barnes is eager to contribute and help his team strive for better results.
