CHICAGO, Ill. — Scottie Pippen, the former NBA superstar, has opened up about his relationship with teammate Michael Jordan in his new book, revealing that the two were never close friends despite their successful partnership on the Chicago Bulls. Pippen’s reflections provide insight into the dynamics of one of the most iconic duos in sports history.

In the book, Pippen writes, “Michael and I got along well enough, though I could tell even then we were never going to be close.” He recalled moments that showcased the difference in their worlds, stating, “If this is what fame looks like, I don’t want any part of it.” Pippen, who grew up in a large family with 11 siblings, expressed the importance of having a close support system rather than seeking validation from others, including Jordan.

Pippen and Jordan played together during the Bulls’ dominant run in the 1990s, winning six championships and completing two three-peats in the NBA Finals. Statistical averages from their playoff success reflect their complementary styles, with Pippen averaging 17.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists, along with 2.0 steals and 0.9 blocks, while Jordan averaged 31.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 5.6 assists.

Although they had a professional relationship that resulted in glory on the court, Pippen emphasized a conscious decision to maintain his independence. “I wasn’t going to be one of those people desperately trying to get Michael Jordan to like me,” he noted. Pippen attributes part of his own success to this mindset, suggesting that his achievements weren’t dependent on Jordan’s approval.

In a poignant moment during his 2010 Hall of Fame induction, Pippen chose Jordan as his presenter, highlighting the significance of their connection in basketball history. “There really was no other choice. So what if Michael and I weren’t best friends?” Pippen wrote. “The two of us will forever be linked together, the best duo in NBA history.”

Despite their differences off the court, it’s clear that their partnership on the court was pivotal in shaping the legacy of the Chicago Bulls. Today, both Pippen and Jordan continue to be celebrated figures, hailed as arguably the most successful duo in NBA history.
