Sam Darnold Seahawks Contract Announcement

SEATTLE, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks have signed quarterback Sam Darnold to a three-year contract worth $100.5 million, a deal that allows the team to cut ties after one year if his performance falters. The announcement was made on March 16, 2025, as Darnold was officially introduced as a Seahawk following a notable season with the Minnesota Vikings.

Darnold’s contract features a fully guaranteed salary of $37.5 million for the 2025 season. For 2026, he is set to receive $27.5 million, with $17.5 million backed by an injury guarantee that converts to full guarantee shortly after Super Bowl LX. If the Seahawks choose to move on from Darnold after the first year, they can do so without incurring additional costs, providing them with flexibility.

The contract also includes performance incentives: $2 million for individual accomplishments, $2.5 million for postseason performance, and $500,000 for team achievements, potentially pushing his earnings to a maximum of $38.5 million annually if he meets all performance benchmarks.

In typical NFL fashion, the Seahawks’ deal serves as a high-stakes audition for Darnold, who is coming off a career-best season in which he threw for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while leading the Vikings to a 14-3 record. However, concerns remain due to his late-season struggles and playoff exit.

“I think we have an opportunity to do something very, very special here,” Darnold said during his introductory press conference. “It’s going to take a lot of hard work — and we know that going in. I’m going to put my head down and go to work.”

The Seahawks’ decision to bring Darnold onboard follows the trade of Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, indicating a strategic shift for the franchise as it revamps its quarterback lineup. Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who previously worked with Darnold, had positive remarks about his leadership abilities and impact on teammates. Darnold’s success will be pivotal as Seattle transitions with changes in key player positions.

“What Sam brings is his ability to elevate his teammates,” Kubiak said. “That’s crucial as we move forward in rebuilding our offense and finding the right balance.”

Seattle’s offensive roster, which includes new additions like Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Cooper Kupp alongside established players, will be instrumental in supporting Darnold’s transition. As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on him to see if he can prove himself worthy of a long-term commitment from the organization.
