Seattle Kraken Trade Yanni Gourde Oliver Bjorkstrand

SEATTLE, Washington — The Seattle Kraken undertook a significant roster reshuffle on Wednesday, trading forwards Yanni Gourde and Oliver Bjorkstrand to the Tampa Bay Lightning as part of a complex three-team deal involving the Detroit Red Wings.

Seattle general manager Ron Francis announced the move, which sees the Kraken receiving two conditional first-round picks in the 2026 and 2027 NHL Drafts, a second-round pick in 2025, and forward Michael Eyssimont. Additionally, the Kraken traded their 2026 fifth-round selection.

Gourde, who was initially dealt to Detroit before being rerouted to Tampa Bay, had 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) in 36 games with Seattle this season. The Lightning retained 50 percent of his contract, while Detroit held 25 percent, facilitating the deal.

“Oliver and Yanni were tremendous players for our organization who led by example on and off the ice,” Francis said. “While these decisions are never easy, this trade creates valuable cap space and draft capital, allowing us to be proactive in improving our roster moving forward.”

In 2023 playoffs, Gourde was instrumental, leading the Kraken with 13 points and recording nine assists over 14 games, showcasing his playoff prowess—a notable asset for Tampa Bay.

Meanwhile, Bjorkstrand leaves Seattle as a strong offensive contributor, having amassed 37 points (16 goals, 21 assists) in 61 games. He previously shone in the playoffs, scoring both goals in Seattle’s Game 7 victory against the Colorado Avalanche during the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs—a feat that secured his spot in Kraken history.

“We are gaining two highly competitive players with playoff experience,” Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois stated. “They complement our team well and can play in various situations.”

Eyssimont, who brings experience from teams including the Winnipeg Jets and San Jose Sharks, joins Seattle after recording 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 57 games this season. “While it was surprising to be traded, I’m really excited to contribute here,” Eyssimont remarked.

The conditional picks included are top-10 protected. If either the 2026 or 2027 first-round pick falls in the top 10, it will transfer to 2028, and Seattle will receive an extra third-round selection. This strategy indicates the Kraken’s long-term planning amidst a disappointing season, positioning themselves positively for the future.

The Kraken currently stand at 26 wins, 32 losses, and 4 overtime losses, sitting 11 points behind the Calgary Flames for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference. With cap space created through this trade, Seattle is anticipated to explore more avenues for roster improvement, including potential summer free-agent signings.
