MORRISVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Sebastian Aho, star of the Carolina Hurricanes, celebrated the arrival of his first daughter just as the team gears up for the second round of the NHL playoffs against the Washington Capitals.

Aho, 27, expressed his joy on Monday, one day before Game 1 of the series. He shared that both his wife and baby are healthy, a relief amid the hectic playoff schedule. “Yeah, feels unreal,” Aho said. “Obviously, I’m so happy that I got to be there and timing-wise it worked out.”

The arrival of Aho’s daughter corresponds with a week where the Hurricanes had a break for practice and recovery, allowing him to relish the personal milestone. Right before the break, the Hurricanes eliminated the New Jersey Devils in a thrilling five-game series.

Aho highlighted the changes that come with fatherhood, stating, “Guys with kids here, they all said, ‘Your life’s going to change.’ And for sure it did. Obviously you hold your baby the first time, it’s the best feeling in the world.”

This is the second new arrival in the Hurricanes’ locker room during the playoffs, as forward Eric Robinson also welcomed a daughter earlier in the first round. Following similar sentiments, Robinson shared, “Holding her and staring at her all day, just kind of smiling. It’s been awesome.”

Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour noted the special bond the team shares, calling the locker room a “big family.” He encouraged teammates to cherish these personal moments, reminding them that life moves quickly, especially during a demanding playoff season.

As the Hurricanes prepare for their playoff matchup, Aho is focused on balancing the joys of fatherhood with the responsibilities of competing for the championship.
