Sergio Ramos Nears Liga MX Move as Monterrey Awaits Medical Tests
MONTERREY, Mexico — Sergio Ramos, the legendary former Real Madrid defender, is on the verge of joining Liga MX club Monterrey, pending medical and physical evaluations. The 38-year-old free agent could sign a one-year deal if he passes the tests, according to reports from TUDN‘s Diego Medina.
Monterrey’s high-ranking officials reportedly intervened to prioritize Ramos over Carlos Cuesta, a defender from Belgium’s Genk. While Cuesta was initially the top target, the club shifted focus to Ramos due to his experience and availability as a free agent. Cuesta’s transfer, valued at $5 million, remains a backup option if Ramos fails the evaluations.
A medical team from Monterrey is en route to Spain to conduct the necessary tests. Ramos has been inactive for six months, raising concerns about his fitness. However, his pedigree as a four-time UEFA Champions League winner makes him an attractive addition for Monterrey, especially after the injury to defender Carlos Salcedo.
“The club is doing everything possible to finalize the deal with Ramos,” said a source close to the negotiations. “If there are doubts after the medical tests, they will return to the Cuesta option.”
Ramos, who last played for Sevilla, could be registered before the March 7 deadline, giving Monterrey flexibility in finalizing the deal. The move would mark a significant coup for Liga MX, following James Rodríguez‘s recent transfer to the league.
Monterrey’s pursuit of Ramos underscores their ambition to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The club has already made room for a foreign player by releasing another squad member, signaling their commitment to securing a high-profile defender.
