Serie A Struggles: Lack of Italian Centre-Forwards a Concern for National Team as Euro 2024 Approaches
Serie A fans and pundits are increasingly becoming alarmed by the scarcity of prolific Italian centre-forwards in the league, posing a significant concern for the Italian national team as Euro 2024 draws closer.
In a recent press conference, Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini highlighted the shortcomings of Gianluca Scamacca, who has struggled to find the net consistently this season, with only six Serie A goals to his name.
Despite Scamacca’s lackluster performance, he stands as the second-highest scoring Italian centre-forward, trailing only Sassuolo‘s Andrea Pinamonti in the Serie A scoring charts.
Besides Pinamonti and Scamacca, the list of Italian centre-forwards among the top 56 goalscorers features the likes of Mateo Retegui, Lorenzo Lucca, Ciro Immobile, Andrea Belotti, Roberto Piccoli, and Lorenzo Colombo.
Interestingly, while Sassuolo‘s Giacomo Raspadori doesn’t make the top scorers’ list, he remains a strong candidate for Italy‘s starting striker position at Euro 2024, having impressed under manager Lele Adani.
The concerns over Italian strikers’ efficiency in Serie A raise questions about coach Adani’s tactical approach, especially considering the historic success of false-nine formations, exemplified by Francesco Totti during his time at AS Roma.
As the Serie A season progresses towards its climax, the performances and goal-scoring records of Italian forwards will be closely monitored by fans and national team management in anticipation of Euro 2024.
