Severe Storms Expected This Weekend in Maryland Amid Ongoing Drought

BALTIMORE, Maryland — Meteorologist Ava Marie warns that scattered thunderstorms could bring heavy downpours this weekend in Maryland as the state grapples with an ongoing severe drought.
Although much of today will be dry, the chances for storms are expected to increase over the weekend, bringing with them a risk of rain and thunder through early next week. “We are entering an unsettled weather pattern, which is concerning for outdoor activities, but we do need the rain,” said Marie.
Central and Western Maryland are currently in a severe drought. Despite periods of rain over the past year, Maryland is about seven inches behind its normal rainfall. This year, the deficit stands at approximately four inches, amounting to nearly a foot less rain overall.
“The ground is really dry, wells are drying up, and many areas look very parched,” she stated. Rain amounts from this weekend’s storms could range from one to three inches, particularly across central and northern Maryland.
On Saturday afternoon and evening, isolated storms are likely to develop into more widespread activity, with the potential for heavy downpours and severe weather. Marie noted that there’s a small risk for damaging winds and hail.
“If you’re going to be outside, keep an eye on the weather,” she advised. Residents can stay informed using the WBAL app, which will send alerts for any strong storms in the area.
Sunday may also see multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms as the unsettled pattern continues. While it may be challenging to predict exact rainfall patterns, Marie encourages locals to check for updates daily.
Marylanders are reminded that any rain will be beneficial as they navigate the upcoming weekend’s adverse weather conditions.
