Severe Weather Storms Wisconsin April 2025

MADISON, Wis. — Residents of Southern Wisconsin should prepare for severe storms expected to hit the area on Wednesday, as a core of low pressure approaches from the Great Plains. The system is anticipated to bring rain, thunderstorms, and a risk of high winds and hail, particularly in the morning hours.

Beginning late Tuesday evening, scattered light rain showers are forecast to increase in coverage as temperatures drop to the mid-30s overnight. By early Wednesday morning, rain showers may transition into a mix of rain and snow in some areas, though most will experience rainfall.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a morning threat index of ‘1’ for the region south of Madison, extending from Prairie du Chien to Milwaukee. The cluster of organized storms is expected to arrive after 3 a.m. and could produce severe weather between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m.

“The greatest likelihood for severe storms will occur in the early morning hours,” said meteorologist Doug McMullin. “Residents should remain vigilant, as hail and gusty winds can occur within these thunderstorms.”

As temperatures are forecast to rise during the day, a secondary threat of severe storms is anticipated Wednesday afternoon, particularly between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. The SPC has raised the threat level for this timeframe to ‘2’ out of ‘5’. This afternoon system could bring damaging winds and large hail along with a potential for brief tornadic activity.

“Warmer conditions combined with dynamic air movement may lead to more instability in the atmosphere, creating favorable conditions for severe weather,” said meteorologist Laura Resnick. “Residents should have a plan in place in case severe weather warnings are issued.”

Fortunately, calmer weather is expected to return for the remainder of the week. After a peak temperature in the low 60s on Wednesday, conditions will cool significantly, with highs in the mid-50s by Thursday and Friday with mostly cloudy skies.

Forecasters urge residents to stay informed through local weather services and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Having access to real-time weather alerts is essential, especially with the likelihood of severe storms in the forecast.
