Severe Thunderstorms Hit New Orleans Area, Drier Weather Expected Ahead

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Severe thunderstorms swept through the New Orleans area this morning, dumping over an inch of rain in some locations and prompting multiple warnings due to strong winds and hail.
As the cold front stalls just north of the city, the afternoon promises drier conditions with a high temperature reaching near 75 degrees. Rainfall totals varied across the region, with parts of the North Shore receiving more than two inches. Most areas, however, measured between one and one and a half inches.
Jim Simon, a local meteorologist, reported, “The heaviest rain is now moving into Plaquemines Parish, and we anticipate improvements in the Greater New Orleans area later today.”
This morning’s storms generated wind gusts exceeding 50 mph and reports of hail up to quarter-sized in Marrero, which caused temporary disruptions but no major damage.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory that remains in effect until 4 p.m. Winds are currently measured at 10 to 15 mph, but could shift as the day progresses.
“Given the windy conditions, it’s not a great day for boating, especially in open waters,” Simon added. “As the clouds begin to break, temperatures should rise into the high 70s this afternoon.”
Anticipating evening showers and localized thunderstorms, Simon advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying areas where fog could complicate visibility overnight.
Weather forecasts indicate that Tuesday morning will likely start foggy, with mist expected through Thursday morning. “After the fog clears, expect sunny afternoons, with high temperatures reaching the upper 80s,” added Simon.
Looking ahead to the weekend, another cold front is expected to bring significant moisture and potential thunderstorms by Saturday, marking it as another weather impact day. Sunday should return to drier conditions, with temperatures remaining above average.
“We will remain warm through the workweek, but our forecast has identified an unsettled pattern for Saturday, with various showers likely,” Simon concluded.
