Severe Weather Threatens Baltimore Orioles Home Opener Against Red Sox

BALTIMORE, MD — The Baltimore Orioles are set to host the Boston Red Sox for their home opener on March 31, 2025, but severe weather may alter the game plan. Originally slated to start at 3:05 p.m., the game has been pushed to 2:35 p.m. due to the forecast of thunderstorms and heavy rain.
The National Weather Service has issued alerts for strong storms expected to roll into the Baltimore area during the afternoon. Meteorologist Chris Strong stated that the most potent weather activity is anticipated between 5 and 8 p.m. on Monday, with a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms beginning after 2 p.m.
“We are monitoring a slight risk of severe thunderstorms which could bring dangerous wind gusts and hail,” Strong noted. “There is also a small chance for isolated tornadoes.” Fans are urged to remain weather-aware and seek shelter if needed.
The forecast predicts a warm day, with temperatures reaching around 80 degrees in the afternoon. However, the potential for heavy rainfall, totaling between a quarter and half an inch, accompanies the storms. Winds may gust up to 24 mph, adding to the challenging conditions.
“Monday is classified as an ‘Impact Weather’ day,” meteorologist Ava Marie warned. “Expect heavy rain, lightning, and a threat of damaging winds and hail. This could significantly impact both the game and fan attendance.”
The Orioles’ home opener is expected to draw a sellout crowd at Camden Yards. However, the team has adjusted its schedule to accommodate the weather. Parking lots will open at 11 a.m., and pregame festivities are still set to start around 2 p.m.
Jane Ballentine, a spokesperson for Baltimore Gas and Electric, assured that the utility company is ready for any possible power outages resulting from the storms. “We have increased staffing across our service area to respond quickly to any issues,” she said. “In severe storms, fallen trees and limbs are frequent causes of outages.”
As the day progresses, temperatures will drop significantly, with highs only reaching the upper 50s on Tuesday and Wednesday. Following Monday’s storms, the weather will improve slightly, with temperatures returning to the upper 70s by Thursday and Friday, though more rain is expected this weekend.
In summary, while the excitement of the home opener builds, severe weather looms over Camden Yards. Fans and players alike will have to wait and see how Mother Nature decides to play her part on this opening day.
