Severe Weather Warnings Issued as Tornadoes Threaten Chicago Area

CHICAGO (AP) — A Tornado Watch has been issued for the Chicago area as severe storms are expected to sweep through on Wednesday evening, with conditions ripe for tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail. The National Weather Service reports that the watch is in effect until 9 p.m. for Kankakee, Livingston, and Will counties in Illinois, along with Benton and Newton counties in Indiana.
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is also active for Jasper, Lake, Newton, and Porter counties in Indiana until 6:45 p.m. A Tornado Warning earlier issued for Cook, DuPage, Will, and Kankakee counties has expired, but residents remain on alert as new warnings may be issued.
The risk of severe weather is heightened, with the entire Chicago area rated at a Level 2 risk, and certain southwest suburbs facing a Level 3 risk from approximately 3 to 8 p.m. Storms are projected to reach different areas at specific times, impacting DeKalb between 3 and 5 p.m., central Chicago from 4 to 7 p.m., and northwest Indiana from 6 to 9 p.m.
Reports have already indicated severe weather impacts, with tornado sirens sounding in New Lenox around 5 p.m. following the issuance of a Tornado Warning. Will County Emergency Management reported substantial wind damage with a semi truck tipped over on Laraway Road.
The storms are expected to intensify before subsiding, making way for snow showers late Wednesday evening, particularly in areas north of Interstate 80. Forecasters predict a slushy accumulation of 1-2 inches, with isolated spots receiving up to 3 inches, affecting Thursday morning commutes.
The full impact of these storms is compounded by earlier severe weather that wreaked havoc in the region over the previous weekend, with strong winds and hail causing property damage in communities throughout the Chicago area.
As the severe weather system progresses, all residents in the affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and prepared. The National Weather Service highlights the importance of taking appropriate action during tornado warnings, advising individuals to seek shelter in basements or interior rooms devoid of windows.
Additionally, a Wind Advisory will be enacted starting at 10 p.m. lasting until 7 a.m. Thursday. Winds are likely to exceed 50 mph, contributing to hazardous conditions on roadways and prompting concerns for extensive power outages.
Preparation and awareness are crucial as the Chicago area braces for yet another unpredictable spring storm system. Meteorologists are closely monitoring conditions, and residents are encouraged to remain connected to reliable news sources for updates.
