Midwest Winter Storm Snowfall Accumulation March 2025

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A powerful winter storm is currently impacting the Midwest, with significant snowfall reported across various counties in Wisconsin. The National Weather Service (NWS) collected snowfall data Thursday morning, March 20, amid a winter weather advisory in effect for Dodge, Fond du Lac, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, and Washington counties.

As of Thursday, many areas in southeast Wisconsin experienced heavy snowfall, with totals expected to reach up to 15 centimeters (6 inches) through Thursday evening. The storm, named Winter Storm Ezra, has produced a mix of rain, thunder, and snow, creating hazardous travel conditions and prompting power outages.

According to meteorologists, snowfall rates are predicted to be as high as 1-2 inches per hour. Tom Wachs, a weather expert at FOX6, explained, “The FOX Model gives us vital insights into the storm’s developments, helping both our team and our viewers prepare for severe weather. We’re constantly updating our forecasts to provide the most accurate information possible.”

Across the Midwest, blizzard warnings are in effect from Scott City, Kansas, to Red Wing, Minnesota, affecting much of Nebraska and northwestern Iowa. Wind gusts are expected to exceed 80 kilometers per hour (50 mph), which, combined with the heavy snowfall, will create blizzard conditions and severely limit visibility.

The NWS has warned residents in affected areas against non-essential travel. Strong winds have the potential to cause power outages and property damage, especially along major highways such as I-80, I-90, and I-35 throughout Iowa. “Avoid travel if you can,” advised the NWS in its latest statements.

As the storm progresses, weather models indicate more than a 70% chance for significant snowfall across Nebraska to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Moreover, local areas may experience up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) of snow, with risks associated with extreme wind chill conditions.

A further weather system is on the horizon, possibly delivering more snow this coming Sunday into Monday. Meteorologists are keeping an eye on these developments, emphasizing the necessity for residents to stay informed. “We’re urging everyone to remain vigilant as we move through this stormy season,” said Wachs.

As residents across Northeast Wisconsin share their experiences through various media channels, it’s clear that Winter Storm Ezra is a reminder of the region’s unpredictable winter weather. The situation is evolving, and residents are encouraged to stay updated with local forecasts and alerts.
