ANAHEIM, Calif. — Chase Sexton and Jo Shimoda claimed victory at the Anaheim 1 Supercross on Saturday, marking a strong start to the 2025 SuperMotocross (SMX) season. Meanwhile, reigning champion Jett Lawrence faced a rocky opening night, finishing 12th in his title defense bid.

The event, held at Angel Stadium, saw Sexton dominate the 450SX class, while Shimoda secured the top spot in the 250SX division. The night was historic for factory HRC Honda, as both Lawrence brothers, Jett and Hunter, finished outside the top ten for the first time in a 450 Supercross opener.

“It feels amazing to start the season like this,” Sexton said after the race. “The team worked incredibly hard, and it paid off tonight.” Shimoda echoed the sentiment, adding, “This is just the beginning. We’re focused on keeping this momentum going.”

In a special segment on SMX Insider, two-time Supercross champion Ricky Johnson shared insights on the season ahead. “Anaheim 1 always sets the tone,” Johnson said. “It’s a long season, and anything can happen.”

Dr. Joe McGinley, SMX Medical expert, provided an update on Achilles injuries, a common concern in the sport. “Recovery is crucial,” McGinley emphasized. “Riders need to balance performance with long-term health.”

Clinton Fowler, a motorsports analyst, discussed the possibility of Jett Lawrence mounting a championship comeback. “History shows it’s possible, but it won’t be easy,” Fowler said. “Lawrence has the talent, but he’ll need to regroup quickly.”

Looking ahead, the 2025 San Diego Supercross at SnapDragon Stadium promises another thrilling round. Sexton and Shimoda will carry the red plates as points leaders, while Lawrence aims to bounce back. Haiden Deegan, who showed restraint in his performance, is also one to watch.

Josh from MXA previewed the upcoming race, highlighting the MXA Fantasy League app and sharing stats from Ben Bridges. “This weekend’s track will challenge riders in new ways,” Josh said. “Fans should expect some surprises.”
