Shaheen Afridi Refuses PCB’s Offer of Vice-Captaincy Ahead of T20 World Cup
Premier pacer Shaheen Afridi has declined the Pakistan Cricket Board’s offer to serve as the vice-captain to Babar Azam in the upcoming T20 World Cup. The decision comes amidst a series of developments surrounding Afridi’s role within the team.
According to a report on ESPNCricinfo, the PCB deliberated on appointing Afridi as the vice-captain before the squad selection for the T20 World Cup. However, the left-arm pacer turned down the proposition, leading to no official appointment of a vice-captain in the final squad.
Previously, Haris Rauf, who had been recovering from an injury sustained in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), made a comeback to the squad after being declared fully fit. The decision to include Rauf was met with optimism from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), highlighting his anticipated role alongside other key bowlers in the upcoming tournament.
The PCB has recently witnessed changes in leadership, with Mohsin Naqvi reinstating Babar Azam as the white-ball captain for the side. This decision followed Afridi’s removal as the captain after the T20I series defeat in New Zealand earlier this year.
Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad, featuring players such as Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Fakhar Zaman, and Mohammad Rizwan, is set to compete in Group A against teams including India, Ireland, Canada, and host country, USA. The first match for Pakistan is scheduled against USA on June 6 in Dallas.
