Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Named NBA All-Star Starter for the First Time
Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been named an NBA All-Star starter for the first time in his career. Gilgeous-Alexander joins a prestigious list of Thunder players who have achieved this feat, including Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and Paul George.
This recognition further solidifies Gilgeous-Alexander’s status as one of the best players in Oklahoma City Thunder history. Despite the franchise’s relatively short existence, it has seen consistent success and boasts a total of 20 All-Star selections. Gilgeous-Alexander becoming the fourth Thunder player to be named a starter speaks to the team’s strong presence in the league since 2008-09.
What makes Gilgeous-Alexander’s inclusion even more impressive is that he led all Western Conference guards in votes from players and the media. While his fan votes rank third, the recognition from those closely involved with the game illustrates his impact on the court. In fact, he edged out the legendary Steph Curry for a starting spot.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s outstanding performance this season has been a major factor in the Thunder’s success. He has played in all 43 of the team’s games, leading them to a 31-13 record and the top seed in the Western Conference. With an average of 31.1 points, 6.4 assists, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.28 steals per game, he has established himself as a force to be reckoned with at both ends of the court.
The 73rd NBA All-Star Game will take place on Sunday, Feb. 18 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. During the remaining games leading up to the event, the Thunder will strive to secure sole possession of the top seed, potentially earning head coach Mark Daigneault a spot as well. Additionally, there is a slim chance for Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams to earn an All-Star nod.
