Shakib Al Hasan Withdraws from Bangladesh’s Test Series Against South Africa Over Security Concerns
Bangladesh‘s acclaimed all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, is unlikely to participate in the forthcoming home Test series against South Africa due to security concerns. His participation had been eagerly anticipated as he intended to conclude his Test career at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium by featuring in the opening match of the series.
A senior official from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to Cricbuzz that Shakib would not be joining the training camp, which is scheduled to commence on October 18. “He (Shakib) is not coming today, that is for sure,” the official stated on Thursday.
Although Shakib had been included in the national squad for the first Test, growing concerns about his security led to his reconsideration. Shakib’s name was reportedly mentioned among 156 individuals in an FIR related to an alleged murder during civil unrest, which culminated in the downfall of the Awami League government. Shakib had been elected as a parliamentary representative for the Awami League from his hometown, Magura, during the last election cycle.
The Bangladesh selectors initially included Shakib in the squad after receiving a positive indication from the board. However, the scenario changed significantly after expressions of protest against him emerged at Mirpur. Shakib expressed his safety concerns, saying, “I am advised by my close quarter that my security is a concern.”
Furthermore, it was reported that Shakib was advised to pause in Dubai, where he was transiting from New York, late Wednesday evening due to the increased security risks back home. An official involved with the issue commented, “I think if any untoward scene happens during the Test due to Shakib’s appearance, it will send a wrong message to the world, which is why ensuring his security remains challenging.”
