Shane Pinto’s Overtime Goal Lifts Ottawa Senators over Detroit Red Wings
Shane Pinto‘s goal in overtime secured a thrilling 3-2 victory for the Ottawa Senators over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night at Little Caesars Arena. Pinto deflected the puck into the net after a smart play from Thomas Chabot, giving him his second goal of the season in his sixth game back from a league-imposed suspension.
Pinto, who also contributed with an assist, had previously missed 41 games due to violating the league’s anti-gambling policy. He expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating that he is gradually feeling more like his usual self. Last season, Pinto had an impressive record of not missing a single game while scoring 20 goals for the Senators.
Brady Tkachuk and Mark Kastelic also played vital roles in the Senators’ victory, adding goals to the scoreboard. Joonas Korpisalo made 23 saves, ensuring a solid performance between the pipes for Ottawa.
With this win, Ottawa clinched the season series against Detroit with a 3-1 record. The Senators have been on a hot streak, registering at least one point in seven of their last eight games. This displays their growth and ability to handle the ups and downs of the game, as noted by their coach Jacques Martin.
For the Red Wings, Daniel Sprong and Dylan Larkin found the back of the net. Despite the loss, Detroit finishes the month with an impressive 9-2-2 record, highlighting a positive step in the right direction for the team, according to coach Derek Lalonde.
Notably, Larkin extended his point streak to 12 games during the third period, showcasing his exceptional form throughout the season. Interestingly, Larkin was previously knocked unconscious in a game against Ottawa, which resulted in intense booing from the Detroit crowd whenever Mathieu Joseph touched the puck on Wednesday night.
Both teams competed fiercely in their final game before the All-Star break. The first period saw Sprong open the scoring for Detroit, but Kastelic quickly equalized for Ottawa in the second period. Tkachuk’s breakaway goal later in the second period gave the Senators a 2-1 lead. Larkin’s goal in the third period tied the game at 2-all and forced overtime.
The Senators will host Toronto on February 10, while the Red Wings will face Vancouver on the same day.
