Shannon Sharpe Steps Aside Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

NEW YORK, NY – Hall of Fame tight end and media personality Shannon Sharpe has stepped down from his role with ESPN following the filing of a civil complaint accusing him of sexual assault. The announcement came on Thursday, but his colleagues were aware of the impending departure earlier in the week.
Stephen A. Smith, Sharpe’s co-host on ESPN’s First Take, expressed his concerns during a recent podcast. “The court of public opinion is what the Disney’s of the world and others concerned themselves with,” Smith said. “Unfortunately, that has worked against him at this particular moment in time.” Despite the allegations, Smith emphasized, “I know the brother tells me he’s innocent. I believe him.”
Sharpe’s lawyer, Lanny Davis, held a press conference on Tuesday where he stated that Sharpe had proposed a settlement exceeding $10 million prior to the lawsuit being filed. He asserted that the substantial offer underscores Sharpe’s claim of innocence.
Sharpe announced he is taking time off to focus on his family and address the “frivolous claim” against him. However, he has continued to produce content for his podcast, recently recording episodes during the NFL Draft in Green Bay.
The wrestling match of court and public opinion will likely continue as Sharpe navigates this turbulent chapter of his career.
