Shapovalov and Rune Aim for Wins in Acapulco Second Round

ACAPULCO, Mexico — Seeds Holger Rune and Denis Shapovalov will continue their campaigns at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel when they compete in second-round matches Wednesday night. Shapovalov faces American Alex Michelsen, while Rune takes on Brandon Nakashima.
Shapovalov, ranked 32nd, appears fully recovered from a knee injury and has shown impressive form since last fall. He wrapped up 2024 with a title in Belgrade and recently won an ATP 500 event in Dallas. Following a solid opening round win over Nishesh Basavareddy, 7-5, 6-2, Shapovalov extended his winning streak to six matches.
“I feel great and have been working hard to get back to my best. Winning the title recently gives me confidence,” said Shapovalov.
His next opponent, Michelsen, ranked 34th, faced a challenging first-round match against Bu Yunchaokete, emerging victorious after almost three hours of play with a score of 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(5). Michelsen has a 10-5 record in the 2025 season.
“I didn’t play my best, but I’m glad I fought through. Facing a player like Shapovalov will be tough, but I’m ready,” Michelsen stated.
In contrast, Rune, ranked 13th, will seek to overcome Nakashima, who has a 3-0 record against him from their three previous matches, including victories at the 2021 NextGen ATP Finals and the 2023 Shanghai Masters. However, Rune showed resilience in his opener against Roberto Carballes Baena, winning in straight sets.
“I’ve learned from our past matches, and I’m eager for this opportunity. I feel I’ve improved greatly since our last encounters,” Rune commented.
Nakashima, ranked 50th, secured a win over Benjamin Bonzi, but has struggled with consistency this season, holding a record of 4-5.
With Shapovalov riding a wave of momentum and Rune determined to break his losing streak against Nakashima, both players are vying for a chance to advance in the tournament. The matches are set to begin in the evening as the excitement builds in Acapulco.
