Sharks Rookie Celebrini Sets Franchise Assist Record Despite Loss to Flames

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Sharks fought valiantly but ultimately fell short to the Calgary Flames 3-2 at SAP Center on Monday. While the Sharks continue to struggle as the NHL‘s lowest-ranked team, rookie Macklin Celebrini shone through with a record-breaking performance.
Celebrini, the first overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, registered two assists during the game, bringing his total to 36 assists for the season. This achievement surpasses the previous rookie record held by Pat Falloon from the Sharks’ inaugural season in 1991-92. ‘I didn’t know I had the record until the end of the game, but it’s really cool to break it,’ Celebrini said.
San Jose took an early lead when Will Smith scored at 19:35 in the first period, giving the Sharks a 1-0 advantage. Celebrini assisted the goal, demonstrating his ongoing contribution to the team despite their challenging season. ‘It was perfectly open. I like the spot behind the net,’ said Nikolai Kovalenko, who assisted Smith’s goal.
Calgary, which is vying for a playoff spot, exhibited resilience with a strong third period, scoring three goals to secure the win. Adam Klapka tied the game for the Flames at 8:12 in the third period, with Jonathan Huberdeau and Matt Coronato adding goals shortly after. Forward Matt Coronato emphasized the importance of their comeback, saying, ‘We just tried to play a simple game. Put the puck deep and get the puck to the net.’
Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky noted strengths in his team’s defensive efforts despite their sixth consecutive loss. ‘I thought we did some good things defensively… I really liked our first period,’ Warsofsky said.
Dustin Wolf, the Flames’ goaltender, was a critical factor in the victory, stopping 29 shots. ‘Dustin was the reason why we were in that game,’ said Calgary coach Ryan Huska.
This game showcases the Sharks’ potential despite their standings. Celebrini, who also has 57 points this season, is a strong contender for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the league’s top rookie. Despite missing time due to injury, Celebrini has managed to keep the Sharks’ fanbase engaged and hopeful for the future.
The Sharks will be looking to improve their performance as they continue to build around their rookie stars. With a youthful roster, San Jose aims for a brighter future while navigating the challenges of the current season. Celebrini remains optimistic, stating, ‘It’s not the end of the world. We understand the position we’re in.’
