Sheffield, England — Sheffield Wednesday has filed for administration, leading to a 12-point deduction in the Championship. This situation arises amid ongoing financial difficulties with owner Dejphon Chansiri since he took over in 2014.

The club, one of the oldest in English football, has a rich history dating back to 1867. However, recent years have seen financial instability, with numerous breaches of EFL regulations reported. Players and staff have been unpaid, prompting key departures from the club this summer. Currently, they sit at the bottom of the Championship table, having secured just six points from one win, three draws, and seven losses.

Reports indicate that Sheffield Wednesday owes approximately £1 million in unpaid tax to HM Revenue and Customs. This debt likely contributed to their decision to enter administration, with the notice filed at a specialist companies court at 10:01 a.m. today.

The points deduction means Sheffield Wednesday’s total will drop to -6, severely jeopardizing their chance of avoiding relegation. However, this administration move may spur owner Chansiri to sell the club.

Sheffield Wednesday is scheduled to play Ipswich Town on December 20, with an away match at Hillsborough planned for March 14.
