An Al Ahly star, Mohamed El Shenawy, recently opened up about the team’s historic 5-2 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League last year.

Despite this setback, El Shenawy shared how the team rallied together after the defeat. Following the match in South Africa, they traveled to play against Coton Sport in Cameroon. The players had a talk and decided they would win all their remaining matches and aim for the title.

El Shenawy, who is the club captain, pointed out that they didn’t expect to lose so heavily. He mentioned, ‘In terms of numbers and trophies, we got everything. We were doing very well with Marcel Koller.’ This was a pivotal moment for the team, pushing them to refocus their efforts.

Amazingly, they secured a victory against Coton Sport, which reaffirmed their determination to win the championship. The players turned that moment of defeat into fuel for their success.

On a personal note, El Shenawy disclosed that he received significant financial offers to leave Al Ahly but chose to remain loyal to the club. He described Al Ahly as ‘the club of my life’ and expressed gratitude for everything the club has done for him during his career.

During the last season, however, El Shenawy faced challenges with injuries and lost his starting position to Mostafa Shobeir. He accepted the coach’s decision, understanding it was necessary for the team’s success.

Although sidelined for four months, El Shenawy is now back and eager to reclaim his position as the first-choice goalkeeper as the new season approaches.
