The Short-lived Marsch Era: A Look at Leeds United’s Signings and Where They Stand Today
Leeds United made 12 signings over the course of Jesse Marsch’s 12-month stint as manager, but few of those proved to be successful at Elland Road. The American coach helped steer Leeds to survival when he was appointed as Marcelo Bielsa’s successor in February 2022, but he was dismissed a year later with the club sitting just above the relegation zone. We’ve taken a look back at the 12 players Leeds brought in during Marsch’s tenure and checked in on where they are today.
The midfielder Brenden Aaronson was one of the notable signings linked with Leeds during Marcelo Bielsa’s final transfer window, finally joining the club in the summer to reunite with his former boss from Red Bull Salzburg. Aaronson struggled to justify his £25 million fee and found it challenging to adapt to the physical demands of the Premier League. Currently, Aaronson is on loan at Union Berlin, where he has made limited Bundesliga appearances.
Sinisterra, the Colombia international, was expected to fill Raphinha’s shoes and be the new star wing player at Leeds. However, despite having a promising start, he was mostly unavailable due to fitness issues and was nearly absent during the crucial relegation period. Sinisterra later moved to Bournemouth on a permanent deal, where he has made some contributions with goals and assists.
Another significant signing under Marsch was Tyler Adams, who was probably the club’s player of the season until he suffered a season-ending hamstring injury. Bournemouth triggered Adams’ release clause, but he faced another injury setback and played minimal League Cup football before being sidelined again.
Christian Eriksen, with his patient playing style, struggled to adapt to Marsch’s high-press game plan and was ultimately loaned out to Real Betis. Eriksen expressed his interest in continuing at the Spanish club if Leeds does not secure a Premier League spot.
Adrian Rutter, Leeds’ record signing, had a challenging start at the club and mostly saw limited playing time under various managers. However, he has been a standout performer in Leeds’ recent bid to return to the Premier League, with impressive numbers of goals and assists in the Championship.
