Significance of Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami in Durga Puja 2024
Durga Puja is among the most significant festivals dedicated to Goddess Durga and her various divine forms. Celebrated over nine days, the festival reaches its zenith on Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami, marked by deeply spiritual and cultural activities. This year’s celebrations of these auspicious days fall on October 11, 2024.
According to the Hindu calendar, the Ashtami Tithi begins at 3:01 AM on October 10, 2024, and ends at 2:36 AM on October 11, 2024. For Maha Navami, the Navami Tithi starts at 2:36 AM on October 11, 2024, and concludes at 1:28 AM on the following day, October 12, 2024.
Maha Ashtami, known as one of the most important days of Durga Puja, begins with the Mahasnan, or sacred bath, followed by Shodashopachar Puja involving sixteen offerings. On this day, rituals uniquely include the invocation of the nine shaktis, or divine energies, of Goddess Durga. A highlight of Maha Ashtami is the Kumari Puja, in which young unmarried girls are venerated as embodiments of the goddess.
Maha Navami continues with intense religious fervor as devotees pay homage to Goddess Durga in her fierce form as Mahisasuramardini, the demon-slayer. This day commemorates the victory of the goddess over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, symbolically representing the triumph of good over evil.
Another important ritual on Maha Navami is the Navami Homa, held at the end of the day’s ceremonies, symbolizing the culmination of the prayers and rituals conducted during Durga Puja. The convergence of Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami on October 11 provides devotees an opportunity for deep engagement in the rituals to honor Goddess Durga.
Throughout Durga Puja, communities come together to celebrate not only the goddess but also the spirit of unity and togetherness. Vibrant decorations, traditional dances, and devotional music fill the air as devotees participate in communal festivities, accentuating the joy and reverence of the festival.
