Skeleton Crew Season 2 in Doubt Despite Creators’ Hopes
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The future of Disney Plus‘ Star Wars series “Skeleton Crew” remains uncertain as creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford express hope for a second season, despite lackluster viewership numbers. The show, which premiered in December 2024, failed to crack Nielsen‘s Top 10 streaming list during its debut week, raising questions about its renewal.
Watts and Ford, speaking to TechRadar ahead of the Season 1 finale, revealed they have “different possibilities” for a potential second season. “We wanted to make sure this season had a satisfying beginning, middle, and end,” Watts said. “But, if people want to see more Skeleton Crew, we’d be happy to make more.” Ford added, “We’re dreaming of it [a second season]. We’ve come up with different possibilities, so never say never.”
However, the show’s performance has been underwhelming. According to Nielsen, “Skeleton Crew” accumulated only 384 million minutes viewed in its first week, the lowest premiere total for any Star Wars series on Disney Plus. For comparison, “The Book of Boba Fett” garnered 389 million minutes, while “The Acolyte” reached 488 million minutes in their respective debuts.
Luminate, another entertainment data firm, also reported that the series did not break into the Top 10 most-watched TV shows during its premiere week. While these figures only reflect U.S. viewership, they suggest a lukewarm reception for the show, which follows a group of children navigating the Star Wars galaxy.
Despite the challenges, there is still hope for the characters. Watts and Ford hinted that the young cast could appear in future Star Wars projects, including Dave Filoni‘s upcoming crossover movie. “It’s exciting to think about,” Watts said. “There’s always a chance that they [the kids] could meet some surprising people in the future.” Ford added, “What’s exciting about these characters is the kids are actually kid actors, and they’re growing up. So, if they appeared in something else, we’d be telling the story of how they grew up and found their place in the galaxy.”
As fans await Disney’s decision, the Season 1 finale airs January 14 in the U.S. and January 15 in the U.K. and Australia. Whether “Skeleton Crew” returns for another season or its characters reappear elsewhere in the Star Wars universe, the show’s creators remain optimistic about its potential.
