SMU Mustangs to Make ACC Debut Against Nevada Wolf Pack
The SMU Mustangs are set to begin their 2024 college football season as they face the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday at Mackay Stadium. This matchup represents not only a new season but also marks SMU’s first game as an official member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Coming off a successful 11-3 season which included winning the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Championship, the Mustangs are looking to start their ACC campaign with a strong performance. Despite a loss in the Fenway Bowl to Boston College, the team remains confident heading into this opener.
All eyes will be on quarterback Preston Stone, who returns after recovering from a season-ending ankle injury. In the previous season, Stone showcased his capabilities by throwing for 3,197 yards, achieving 28 touchdowns, and recording only 6 interceptions. His leadership on the field will be crucial for SMU’s high-powered offense.
On the other hand, the Wolf Pack will enter the game under new leadership with coach Jeff Choate, who comes from Montana State following a successful tenure. Nevada hopes to improve on its recent struggles, having experienced challenges over the past two seasons.
As the Wolf Pack seeks to establish a competitive edge, players such as running backs Sean Dollars and Boston College transfer Pat Garwo will aim to enhance the team’s offense. However, the Wolf Pack’s defense will need to significantly improve to contend with the explosive offensive capabilities of SMU.
