Sofyan Amrabat, the Moroccan midfielder currently on loan at Fenerbahce, has shed light on the circumstances surrounding his failed permanent transfer to Manchester United. In a recent press conference, Amrabat revealed that Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag had a strong desire to keep him at the club beyond his loan spell.

Amrabat, who played for Manchester United on loan during the 2023/24 season, stated that he has a “special relationship” with ten Hag, dating back to his time at Utrecht when he was just 20 years old. Despite ten Hag’s wishes to retain him, Amrabat hinted that the deal was blocked by Manchester United’s technical director, Jason Wilcox.

The midfielder, who will face Manchester United with Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday, expressed his disappointment over the transfer situation. “He wanted to keep me this summer, so I wish him the best, but not for Thursday. I hope they lose,” Amrabat said, adding, “The only thing that I want to say is that you have to ask Mr. Wilcox” when questioned about the reasons for his departure.

Amrabat’s time at Manchester United was marked by inconsistency, with the player making only ten Premier League starts during his loan period. However, his performance in the FA Cup final was notable, and some fans have expressed regret over the club’s decision not to sign him permanently.

The transfer saga highlights the complexities of Manchester United’s transfer policy, particularly under the constraints of Financial Fair Play regulations. Amrabat’s move to Fenerbahce, where he is reunited with former Manchester United players and manager Jose Mourinho, marks a new chapter in his career, while Manchester United continues to navigate its midfield options.
