Sonny Gray Prepares to Face Astros in Crucial Matchup

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — As the St. Louis Cardinals gear up for a three-game series against the Houston Astros, starting pitcher Sonny Gray is looking to build on what has been a mixed start to the season. Gray, who holds a record of 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA, is aiming for consistency in his fourth start of the season, set for Monday night at 6:45 p.m.
In his previous outings, Gray has demonstrated both promise and struggle. He has only allowed two earned runs in two of his starts but faced difficulties against the Los Angeles Angels, surrendering five runs. His hard-hit rate stands at 48.7%, significantly higher than his career average, which places him among the lowest in the league for qualified starters this season.
“The key for me is reducing hard contact,” Gray said. “I’ve noticed improvements in my hard-hit metrics, but I need to keep that trajectory going if we want to win against a team like Houston.”
The Astros, known for their powerful lineup, batters like Jeremy Peña and Yordan Alvarez are especially staunch, both boasting hard-hit rates exceeding 50%. They will face Gray as left-hander Framber Valdez (1-1, 2.50 ERA) takes the mound for Houston, offering another challenge for the Cardinals’ bats.
“Framber has been lights out lately,” said Astros manager Joe Espada. “He knows how to make the big pitches when it counts.”
The Cardinals have improved significantly against left-handed pitching, ranking fifth overall in on-base plus slugging percentage this season, in stark contrast to their struggles in previous years. The team will look to exploit this as it faces Valdez.
“We’re hitting lefties well this season, and I believe we can maintain that momentum,” said first baseman Willson Contreras, who is recovering from a sluggish start to his season. After a difficult beginning, he posted four hits in eight at-bats, including a homer, against the Philadelphia Phillies last weekend.
To add to their challenges, the Cardinals will be without key players. Shortstop Masyn Winn has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to back spasms, while catcher Ivan Herrera is also a notable absence with knee inflammation.
“It’s tough to lose those guys, but we have depth,” Contreras said. “We need everyone to step up, especially against a tough squad like Houston.”
Injuries have also affected the Astros, who have had to compensate for the absence of starters such as Cristian Javier and Luis Garcia. Overcoming these early-season hurdles could be indicative of each team’s potential success as the season unfolds.
Tonight’s game promises to offer excitement as both teams search for victory to gain momentum in the young season. As Gray takes the bump for St. Louis, all eyes will be on how he manages the powerful Astros lineup while aiming to improve his overall performance.
