INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — After a notable trade brought her to the Indiana Fever, Sophie Cunningham is ready to tackle new challenges alongside superstar Caitlin Clark as the WNBA season approaches.

The Fever acquired Cunningham from the Phoenix Mercury in February, part of a four-team trade also involving the Connecticut Sun and the Dallas Wings. Cunningham, who spent six seasons with the Mercury, expressed excitement about her transition, stating she felt “too comfortable” in Phoenix.

“I think it’s built me for something bigger and better,” said Cunningham, 28. “The stage that we’re about to be on with the players that I’m about to be with — I think I am built for this.”

Cunningham is poised for a significant role in head coach Stephanie White’s offense, which is centered around Clark, last year’s No. 1 overall draft pick and expected 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year. Clark’s impressive collegiate career at Iowa, where she became the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer, has heightened expectations for the Fever, who are under increased media scrutiny.

“They brought in a lot of veterans who have that experience,” Cunningham noted. “When you are close-knit in the locker room and off the court, and you have that chemistry, it automatically transforms to the court.”

Despite the pressures of spotlight and scrutiny, Cunningham remains focused on achieving a championship with her new team. The Fever are set for an expansive media presence this season, with 41 of their 44 games to be televised.

“I’m just refocused. There’s a different type of vibe and energy about me,” said Cunningham, who aims to elevate her physical training and leadership skills. “I think it’s a year of firsts, and I’m excited for all that.”

In the previous season with the Mercury, Cunningham averaged 8.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Her new opportunity with the Fever, alongside star players like DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard, is viewed by her as a chance to thrive.

Cunningham was selected by the Mercury out of Missouri with the 13th overall pick in the 2019 WNBA draft and gained recognition for her strong work ethic and unique style. “I love the dynamic that the team brings, with a motion offense that revolves around reading the game,” Cunningham said.

The Fever concluded the last regular season with a 20-20 record, securing a playoff spot for the first time since 2016. In their upcoming season opener, they will host the Chicago Sky on May 17.

As Cunningham prepares for the season, she looks forward to embracing her role and helping the Fever reach new heights.
