Sophie Cunningham Shines in Preseason Opener for Indiana Fever

INDIANAPOLIS — WNBA star Sophie Cunningham made headlines in her offseason trade to the Indiana Fever as she showcased her competitive spirit during a preseason game against the Washington Mystics on Saturday.
The Fever faced the Mystics at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, winning 79-74 in overtime. This match marked the first preseason game for the Fever, who have welcomed 10 new players and a new coaching staff. The team started strong, overcoming a 15-point deficit early in the game.
In a notable moment, Cunningham clashed with Mystics rookie Kiki Iriafen while battling for a rebound, resulting in a flagrant foul against Iriafen. Lexington Hull, a fellow Fever guard, had to separate the two as tensions rose on the court. Cunningham wasn’t afraid to voice her frustration, telling Iriafen, “you don’t (expletive) do that,” after falling to the ground.
Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White praised Cunningham, saying, “Sophie’s a dawg. She’s a competitor. She raises the level of play of everybody around her as soon as she steps foot on the floor.” Cunningham played a pivotal role, scoring 17 points and leading the team with a solid performance despite her new role.
The Mystics, who struggled last season, showed they will not be taken lightly, aiming to set a tough tone early in the preseason. The teams displayed physical play, with other incidents involving Cunningham and veteran Mystics players.
As the Fever prepare for their next game against the Brazilian National Team on Sunday, excitement builds around Cunningham’s potential contributions for the season ahead. With a commitment to play tough and competitive basketball, Cunningham embodies the determination the Fever are aiming for.
