Sophie Devine Reflects on Emotions Ahead of Final World Cup Match
VIZAG, India — New Zealand cricket captain Sophie Devine is feeling the weight of emotion as she prepares for her final match at the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup. Devine admitted that she has already shed tears in anticipation of this significant moment in her career.
During a recent match against England, New Zealand faced an early setback when star spinner Sophie Ecclestone left the field due to a shoulder injury. This incident occurred shortly after she made a dive in the field during the second over. England’s Linsey Smith capitalized on the situation by taking the crucial wicket of Suzie Bates.
New Zealand, sometimes referred to as the White Ferns, is rallying to send Devine off on a positive note. They aim to finish the tournament strong, hoping to surpass Sri Lanka and claim a fifth-place standing.
“We want to win this game for Sophie,” said one of her teammates. “It’s important for us to finish on a high, especially for her last game.”
Later in the day, India will play against Bangladesh at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy. India hopes to carry momentum into the knockout stages by securing a win. They are set to face Australia in the second semi-final on Thursday.
As for Bangladesh, the team has only one win in the tournament but could climb to sixth place with a victory over India. The stakes are high for both teams as they aim to finish the group stages on a positive note.
