COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball junior Ashlyn Watkins suffered a torn ACL during the Jan. 5 game at Mississippi State, sidelining her for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. The injury occurred during a critical SEC matchup, and her surgery is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.

Watkins, a key player for the No. 2/2-ranked Gamecocks, was having a standout season before the injury. She ranked fourth in the SEC with 1.86 blocks per game and was second on the team in rebounding, averaging 6.4 rebounds per game. Through 14 games, she also contributed 7.2 points per game, showcasing her versatility on both ends of the court.

The loss of Watkins is a significant blow to South Carolina’s championship aspirations. Head coach Dawn Staley expressed her support for Watkins, stating, ‘Ashlyn has been a vital part of our team, and we’re heartbroken for her. We’ll do everything we can to support her recovery and look forward to her return stronger than ever.’

South Carolina’s next challenge comes on Thursday, Jan. 9, when they host Texas A&M at Colonial Life Arena. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. The team will need to adjust its lineup and strategy to compensate for Watkins’ absence as they continue their pursuit of an SEC title and a deep NCAA tournament run.
