COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina has parted ways with offensive coordinator Mike Shula after a disappointing start to the season. The announcement came just a day after the Gamecocks suffered their sixth loss, falling 30-14 to Ole Miss.

This season, South Carolina’s offense has struggled significantly, averaging only 302.1 yards per game, the worst in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). In the recent loss to Ole Miss, the team was out-gained 417-230 and only managed 50 yards rushing.

Coach Shane Beamer decided to relieve Shula of his duties after the Gamecocks’ record fell to 3-6, including a 1-6 mark in Southeastern Conference play. Shula had taken over as offensive coordinator after former coach Dowell Loggains was promoted to head coach.

Shula joined South Carolina in 2024 as a senior offensive assistant and later became the quarterbacks coach. However, fans have expressed their frustration with the offense throughout the season, particularly during the Oklahoma game, when they chanted “Fire Shula.”

During Shula’s time, the offense failed to reach 350 total yards in any game and ranked last in the SEC in both total yards and points per game. The team’s highest score in an SEC matchup this season has been 21 points.

Shula has a notable NFL background, having worked with several teams, including the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos. His father, Don Shula, is a Hall of Fame coach known for his success with the Miami Dolphins.

As the search for a new offensive coordinator begins, it remains unclear who will assume play-calling duties for the remainder of the season. The Gamecocks will continue to address their offensive woes amid growing pressure from frustrated fans.
