SOUTHAMPTON, England – Southampton Football Club faces a daunting challenge as the Premier League season approaches its conclusion, with the team at risk of breaking the record for the lowest points total in league history. Currently sitting on just nine points after 29 games, the club is well below the 11 points held by Derby County since the 2007-08 season.

The journey back to the top flight has not gone as planned for Southampton, who were promoted from the Championship last summer after defeating Leeds United in the playoff final. However, the club has struggled significantly in its first season back in the Premier League. After parting ways with manager Russell Martin in December, the team has succumbed to a nine-match losing streak at home, managing only two league victories.

With nine matches remaining in the season, Southampton has a slim chance to avoid becoming remembered as the worst team in Premier League history. A victory or three draws in the next fixtures would surpass Derby’s dismal record, a source of motivation for the beleaguered team and its dedicated fanbase.

New manager Ivan Juric has taken over responsibilities with a clear objective: avoiding the disgrace of being the worst team in the league’s history. “I told them I don’t want to live this experience,” Juric said. “We have had a really bad season, but we can still win games.”

The determination among players has been apparent, with discussions circulating around the goal of bettering the previous low point total. Tim Bisantz, a Southampton supporter and podcaster, reflected the general sentiment, stating, “The realistic expectations were that we would be able to get somewhere around 15th.” However, their performance has “just been s**t,” as he describes their season.

Fan attendance at St. Mary’s Stadium has remained impressive despite the team’s struggles, with over 30,000 supporters still showing up for matches. This unwavering support has not gone unnoticed by Juric. “It is a real surprise to have fans like this with us in what is really a bad moment for the club,” he remarked. “The players have to really appreciate what they are doing for us.”

As the end of the season looms closer, many fans are beginning to mentally prepare for the possibility of relegation. “Honestly, it’s really been tough,” said supporter Jamie Cozens. “It just gets you downbeat every time you see your team losing.”

The situation evokes memories of Derby County’s infamous season, as noted by Lynn Hemsworth, chair of Derby County Supporters’ Club: “It’s always there, hanging over us, especially when another club is on the brink of breaking our record.” Hemsworth expressed a hope for Southampton to escape this undesirable fate but admitted to the difficulty of forgetting their own past.

Statistically, Southampton has suffered the most points dropped from winning positions this season, totaling 23. Juric acknowledged the team’s challenges in maintaining leads during matches and expressed a need for improvement. “We have nine games to do it better and try to win more points,” he stated.

With their next match against Crystal Palace, the Saints have minimal time to gather momentum and strive for some semblance of pride in their remaining fixtures. For the pride of the club and the wellbeing of its loyal fans, the race against history has truly begun.
