Southeast Louisiana Braces for Rare Winter Storm, Possible Snow
NEW ORLEANS, La. — Southeast Louisiana and the New Orleans area are preparing for an unusual winter weather event next week, as a blast of arctic air is expected to bring freezing rain, sleet, and even snow. The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory, with temperatures predicted to plummet into the 20s by Monday morning.
The cold front, originating from Canada, will interact with multiple weather systems, creating the potential for a wintry mix across the region. Meteorologists are closely monitoring the situation, as models show conflicting forecasts for precipitation types and accumulation. The most likely time for wintry weather is Tuesday, with the possibility of snow north of Interstate 10 and Interstate 12.
“This is a very inconsistent forecast, but the ensembles have been consistent in showing wintry weather,” said a local meteorologist. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the U.S. Global Forecast System (GFS) both predict a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow, though exact details remain uncertain.
Residents are urged to take precautions, including protecting pipes and preparing for icy conditions. St. Tammany Parish officials are already planning for potential road closures and are considering opening warming shelters if needed. “We’re telling everyone to stay aware,” said Michael Vinsanau of St. Tammany Parish. “Everyone would love a little snow, but we don’t want the freezing rain.”
Local agencies, including the Causeway Commission and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, are preparing for the storm. “We’re going to be very prepared,” said DOTD representative Scott Boyles. “We’re coming in this weekend on overtime to make a brine to apply potentially on the bridge.”
As the region braces for the cold, residents are reminded to stay updated on the latest forecasts and to avoid travel if conditions worsen. The WDSU First Warning Weather Team will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
