Southern Company Achieves 100% Renewable Energy For TOUR Championship, Marks Sustainability Milestone
ATLANTA, Aug. 30, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Southern Company announced that it will provide 100% renewable energy for the TOUR Championship for the third consecutive year. This collaboration with Georgia Power and Southern Company Gas aims to enhance sustainability measures during the prestigious professional golf event.
The TOUR Championship, the culmination of the PGA TOUR‘s FedExCup Playoffs, will take place from August 29 to September 1, 2024, at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. This annual event attracts top-performing golfers and is regarded as a summer highlight for sports fans.
In a significant achievement for the first time in its history, the 2023 TOUR Championship earned the GEO Certified® status, recognizing its commitment to sustainability practices. According to Brazos Barber, director of sustainability at the PGA TOUR, the partnership with Southern Company has been instrumental in achieving this milestone.
The GEO Certification is awarded by the GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation based in Scotland, reflecting the tournament’s efficient management in various sustainability aspects such as energy use, waste management, and social impacts.
Barber emphasized that the certification demonstrates a genuine commitment to sustainability efforts, stating, “It’s a stamp of approval” for the work being achieved.
For the upcoming 2024 event, Southern Company’s sustainable solutions align with the company’s broader commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The company reported a 49% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2007 levels.
