Kentucky Derby 2025 Sovereignty Winner

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sovereignty, ridden by jockey Junior Alvarado, triumphed in the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs. The race was characterized by soggy conditions, as heavy rain drenched the track throughout the day.

Sovereignty entered the race with 9-1 odds, but surged in the final stretch, narrowly defeating the pre-race favorite, Journalism, who finished second. Baeza claimed third place, while Final Gambit finished fourth. Alvarado expressed his joy after the race, stating, “It means the world to me. My family’s here. I thought I had a great chance,” highlighting his confidence and the significance of his first Derby win.

The victory was particularly meaningful for Alvarado, whose father was also a jockey. He noted, “I’m pretty sure they’re way over the moon right now,” encouragingly speaking about his parents’ pride. The horse’s loyalty, especially during Alvarado’s recent injury that kept him from riding for weeks, was another focal point of his post-race comments.

The large crowd of 147,406 spectators at Churchill Downs witnessed the muddy track conditions, which contributed to the race’s unpredictability. Rain had been pouring down for much of Derby Day, leading to conditions that many horses had to navigate for the first time.

Trainer Bill Mott celebrated his second Derby victory with this win, the first being in 2019 with Country House. In a further nod to his family’s legacy in the sport, Alvarado expressed gratitude towards the horse for sticking with him through the challenges, reiterating the emotional weight of the win.

This Derby was not only a celebration of horse racing but also a testament to the enduring spirit and deep connections within the sport.
