CHICAGO, IL — Chicago White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas is stepping up to fill a new role on the team after the recent decision to create an open position. Manager Will Venable announced on Friday that Vargas will alternate between third base and first base, depending on the opposing pitcher.

Vargas, who has impressed fans this season, will play third base against right-handed pitchers while fellow infielder Lenyn Sosa will slide to first on those days. “He’s a guy that’s capable of playing multiple positions and not skipping a beat,” Venable said. “While sticking to one spot is important, being versatile is equally valuable.”

The 2025 season has been a turning point for Vargas, who struggled after joining the Sox in a three-team trade last summer. During his first stint, he batted only .104 with numerous errors on the field. However, Vargas has turned things around this season, posting an impressive .887 OPS over his last 14 games.

<p“Any time I can help the team, I’m more than glad to do it,” Vargas told the Sun-Times, embracing his new responsibilities. In a recent game against the Texas Rangers, Vargas contributed significantly with two hits, including a double, and helped secure a 10-5 victory for his team.

General Manager Chris Getz highlighted Vargas’s defensive and offensive growth. “This is the player we envisioned. His defense has been better than we thought, and his offensive production has really come alive,” Getz praised. Vargas, who earned a Player of the Week award, attributes his success to consistent practice and a focus on improvement.

Vargas expressed his commitment to the team, saying, “We’re all here trying to prove what we can do in this league. I love the organization, and I want to be here.” As he continues to adjust and make an impact, Vargas has solidified his place in the long-term plans for the White Sox.
